, florida, to sit down with president obama. scott, what did the president have to say? >> pelley: noragreat to be with you this morning. the the president and mr. romney have so many campaign stops in florida and ohio, it almost looks like they're running for governor. but we caught up with the president in st. petersburg, as you said, and one of the things we wanted to ask him about is how things would change in a second obama term. we pointed out to the president, of course, if he is re-elected, it is very likely that john boehner will still be speaker of the house, and paul ryan will still be the chairman of the budget committee. so i wanted to know from the president how they would try to achieve a grand bargain on the budget with all of the players remaining the same. here's a little bit of what the president had to say. if you win, will you be willing to compromise? what are you willing to give in order to complete this grand bargain on the budget that has failed? >> well, keep in mind that the trillion dollars that we cut, you know, was a painful exerse. there are some programs that

worth noting. one is missile defense. when the obama administration came into office, they did not cut funding for missile defense. they kept it at about the same level, about $10 billion a year. but they shifted resources to focus much more on other things. these are systems like patriots, it is good for helping protect our forces overseas were -- now, national missile defense systems are really concerned with protecting the united states in particular. the obama administration changed our plans for european missile defense to leverage the existing missile defense system and put that system sure first in romania and poland later on. they also curtailed the ground-based midcourse. they stopped it at 30. i think the wrong administration would actually probably go back and change the balance again, much more in favor of national missile defense systems and we have actually seen in congress, republicans have been pushing the idea of deploying some of these ground-based and interceptors on the united states disclosed. another area of specific differences in shipbuilding. it is an imperfect

criticism of president obama's international policies. i'm wolf blitzer, you're in "the situation room." >>> dramatic developments unfolding. let's begin with some important new developments in the attacks on u.s. facilities in both cairo, egypt. and benghazi, libya. u.s. sources now tell cnn the attack in benghazi was actually planned in advance and the perpetrators used a protest outside the u.s. consulate in benghazi there simply as a diversion. four americans died including the united states ambassador to libya chris stevens. our foreign affairs correspondent, jill dougherty, has been working her sources to get a better idea on exactly what happened. our senior international correspondent nic robertson is monitoring the search for who's responsible. and our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence is keeping tabs on the u.s. military's response to what's going on as well. let's go to jill first. she's watching what's going on. jill, what's the latest over at the state department beyond the heartbreak of a top u.s. diplomat, three others killed? >> right, wolf. just in a few minutes we
